ARCO 2012, Madrid. Stand Nirox Foundation, South Africa Elena Rocchi Residency “Drawing on Origins” August/September 2012

Drawing on Origins
Elena Rocchi

Critical to my work is RE_presentation as a link between ideas and physical reality.
Time and history meet in it. I move between imagination and projection, prehistory and history, space and time.
My future Residency at Nirox Foundation (Aug/Sept 2012), headed ‘Drawing on Origins’, will be based on drawing as my primary medium, and its fundamental means of expression throughout human history.
The experience will move trough 2 things: a personal artistic investigation and an architectural workshop on the origins of man and enviroment, at a site near Malapa Cave where one of mankind’s most significant discoveries was made by Lee Berger:
"A species of early human has been discovered in a South African cave, shedding light on a critical period during which our ancestors began to walk upright, use tools and develop a capacity for language... a previously unknown type of hominid, the evolutionary branch of primates that led to humans.”
The idea of the site as drawing and the drawing of site is paramount to the entire project. As well the subjects of drawing, writing and building.
Mapping, tracing, and drawing on the larger environs of the cradle of humankind,  incredible sites based on growth centered around rocky craters.

The video presented at the Nirox Foundation Stand at ARCO is an intial exploration into one of my drawings of a Fossil Scull. An allegory on melancholy of a loss of a human life link to the discovering of the scull of the Australopythecus Sediba in Malapa, South Africa.
A flight over a drawing.
A flight on the topography of a human beeing at first. And a fall on earth... till its dark side, till the origin of humanity.

The entire project for Nirox Foundation is about to DIS_appear and RE_appear on the other side of the painting, in the timeless space of invention.
